It has been said a chimney without a cap is like a house without a roof.

If you had a hole a foot wide in your roof you would fix it immediately. Chimney flues may be even larger than that, When it rains where does all that water go? It runs down the chimney flue tiles and seeps into the brick, stone, block and mortar.over time it can seep behind the firebricks. The inside of the chimney stays wet long after the rain stops.

This damage can often times be easily avoided by having a chimney cap installed. These caps help prevent animals and rain from entering your fireplace. Most caps also act as a spark arrester helping to catch any sparks that come up the chimney from catching the roof on fire.

Even though you may not be able see the damage happening, it's there, slowly deteriorating your brick fireplace and the masonry on your chimney. This is a particularly important  if you have a metal firebox incorporating a metal damper and smoke shelf. All fireplace dampers made of metal are subject to this deterioration as the water mixes with creosote and mild acids are formed. Even chimneys for wood stoves need of a cover.

If you leave your chimney without a cap when it rains water runs down the chimney flue tiles and seeps into the brick, stone, block and mortar. Over the years  it can seep behind the firebricks. Most caps also act as a spark arrester helping to catch any sparks that come up the chimney from catching the roof on fire.

Even though you may not be able see the damage happening, it's there, slowly deteriorating your brick fireplace and the masonry on your chimney. Contact us today to have a mason or chimney sweep com provide you with an inspection or repair.
